DIAMONDS GUIDE

Your Guide
To Diamonds

Natural
Diamonds

Formed deep in the earth as long as three billion years ago, natural diamonds are a wonder of nature. These stunning pieces of the ancient world are the oldest (and most beautiful!) things you'll ever own.

Lab Grown
Diamonds

An achievement of modern technology, lab grown diamonds are created in a laboratory through either a high pressure, high temperature (HPHT) or chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process in a matter of weeks.

Diamond Rating and Grades

Why should you ask for a grading report?

Diamonds can be a significant financial and emotional investment. An independent GIA Diamond Grading Report can offer assurance that you know exactly what you're getting and helps ensure you're comparing apples to apples as you shop.

How are diamonds graded?

Color, Clarity, Cut, and Carat Weight are collectively called the 4Cs of diamond quality. Color measures a diamond's absence of color. Clarity considers a diamond's inclusions and blemishes and how they affect its appearance. Cut describes the diamond's fire, brilliance, and proportions. Carat weight is the measurement of who much a diamond weighs in carats. These grades are determined by trained gemologists and often recorded in a diamond grading report.

How does grading impact a diamond's price?

Perfect things are hard to find, and a natural diamond's price is directly related to its quality and rarity. As you move up the grading scale for each of the 4Cs, there are fewer and fewer stones available, making them more rare, more precious, and often more expensive. Working with an experienced local jeweler is the best way to ensure you maximize your budget and get the best quality stone possible.

Natural vs Lab Grown

Laboratory grown diamonds have essentially the same chemical, physical, and optical characteristics as natural diamonds, but their origin stories are very different. All natural diamonds were formed by the earth billions of years ago; lab grown diamonds are created in laboratories or factories in days or weeks. While lab grown diamonds lack the rarity of natural diamonds, they offer the same beauty as natural diamonds and are often less expensive because of their mass production.
